Monday Night Sept. 20th

Today was a day full of smiles. I had the chance to show off my classroom photos to a new crew of nurses and I was able to be on speaker phone to hear Dell Wood be awarded LCPK TOTY:) I am so happy for you Dell. I was given blood today for anemia and I am feeling much better. My mom came to visit today and I am hoping oxygen levels and blood test will allow me to be released tomorrow so I can head home to Hinesville. Sweet hubby Shane has been the best and my dad is even trying to help with the animals. Your well wishes and prayers have really helped pull me through a rough week. I experienced something called red-man syndrome from a medication I hope none of you ever experience that, I looked like a hot tamale and felt like I was on fire, poor Shane is so helpful through all my medical reactions. Please continue to pray for us, we love you all and I cannot express how much your support means to me!
Love,
Verlonna

Her face, arms, and neck broke out in a severe rash! She's been through so much this week and now probably wont be able to leave until tuesday. Please pray for her!!

last post for this cycle

Cycle number two is finally ending and we are ready to get outta here. Verlonna feels real bad with an headache. she hasnt been abled to eat in two days and its taking a toll on her. I wish she could eat something because it would help her feel better. The blisters and the nausea are preventing her to eat.
We see the Dr. later and hopefully he'll say we can leave. If so we'll be outta here tonight. I know that would make verlonna feel so much better.

Thanks

Tuesday

It's 100pm, verlonna is doing pretty good. She's tired and getting ready to take her 4th treatment of the week. Her blood pressure is low (92/64), when it hits 90 then they have to get approval to do another dose. Her next dose is at 200. Shes doing really good and i think its because of the pictures of her kids hanging on the wall. She loves the pictures and looks at them all the time. Im going to post some pics of her room later on.

Keep the prayers and the well wishes coming!!!

What is IL-2?

Verlonna is receiving a treatment that is still in the trial stages. This treatment is abbreviated as IL-2. Immunotherapy uses substances similar to the ones that the body's immune system produces to destroy cancer cells. When you have an infection, your immune system releases many specialized proteins called cytokines. They help fight the infection. Some of these cytokines can also help fight cancer cells. Normally the body produces very small amounts of these cytokines. But it is possible to make large quantities of cancer-fighting cytokines in a laboratory.

IL-2 is not without serious side effects. Some important things to remember about the side effects of IL-2:

•Most people do not experience all of the side effects listed.
•Side effects are often predictable in terms of their onset, duration and severity.
•Side effects are almost always reversible and will go away after treatment is complete.
•There are many options to help minimize or prevent side effects.
•There is no relationship between the presence or severity of side effects and the effectiveness of the medication
•IL-2's side effects and their severity depend on how much of the drug is given. In other words, high doses may produce more severe side effects. In some cases, this could necessitate hospitalization and/or intensive care unit support.

Melanoma Facts

What Is Melanoma? Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. It begins in skin cells called melanocytes. Melanocytes are the cells that make melanin, which gives skin its color. Melanin also protects the deeper layers of the skin from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

When people spend time in the sunlight, the melanocytes make more melanin and cause the skin to tan. This also happens when skin is exposed to other forms of ultraviolet light (such as in a tanning booth). If the skin receives too much ultraviolet light, the melanocytes may begin to grow abnormally and become cancerous. This condition is called melanoma.

About Team Lowe

Verlonna is a teacher at LCPK who has been battling melanoma for over five years. She must now seek treatment at Emory University in Atlanta. Funds raised for Team Lowe will be used to offset medical and travel expenses acquired during these treatments. Please check back often for updates on Verlonna's care and feel free to make a donation using the information provided on the right side of this page. You can also use the PayPal button to make a donation with a credit or debit card.
